SA Comedians stand up for Police Widows
04 Aug 2006 - 05 Aug 2006

Comedians are standing up…and making their voices heard. SA’s top comedians will be taking stand up comedy one step further, using humour to remind audiences of what’s not funny!

David Kau’s one man show I DID THESE JOKES FIRST will take place on 4 August and Darren ‘Whackhead’ Simpson’s show IT’S NOT FUNNY will be taking place on 5 August at The Johannesburg Civic Theatre. Proceeds of both shows will go to the SAPS Widows and Orphans Fund.

David Kau and 94.7’s Rude Awakening team – including Darren ‘Whackhead’ Simpson – will join comedians Chris Forrest, Krijay Govender, Riaad Moosa, Martin Jonas and David Kibuukka, to use stand-up comedy as a vehicle to tackle the serious issue of escalating crime in South Africa.

The initiative, which is the brainchild of Roddy Quin of REAL CONCERTS and comedian David Kau, will raise funds for the widows and children of policemen who have been killed whilst on duty. “David and I were reading the story of the four policemen who were killed in Jeppe. They were apparently trying to stop a robbery at Pick ‘n Pay. We looked at this and wondered what happens to the widows and children of these policemen who were killed,” said Quin. “We felt we had to do something. And that’s how the idea came about.

Given the huge following of stand-up comedy in the country, Quin believes that the funds raised in the two shows – the first being David Kau’s one-man show (4 August) and the second featuring Whackhead and the 94.7 team (5 August), could make a significant difference.
