As an antidote to year-end madness, South Africa’s most successful rock band (now based in California, USA) returns to the country this December and is set to soundtrack the summer season with once-off gigs in Joburg, Durban and Cape Town. 94.7 Highveld Stereo Presents “Just Jinjer” Live in concert at the Centre Court Emperor’s Palace on Friday 15 December; Wave House Gateway in Durban on Wednesday 20 December and Cape Town’s Kirstenbosch Gardens on Friday 22 December.
Since forming in 1996 their debut album (“All Comes Round”) became the best-selling rock album in South African history, the second album (“Something for now”) went gold in just 3 weeks, with the group selling over 250 000 albums in their decade-long career. From the instant their debut introduced Matthews’ set of simply superb songs to rock fans around the country, Just Jinjer has been the gold standard in homegrown rock music. JJ remains a compelling live force, steadily making inroads into the LA music scene, with the Los Angeles Times naming JJ one of its “buzz bands” of the week.
In-between their albums, Just Jinjer became one of the hottest touring acts, playing extensively in South Africa and beyond its borders with the likes of U2, Crash Test Dummies, Def Leppard, The Counting Crows and Toto, co-headlining with Hootie and the Blowfish, Skunk Anansie, Stevie Wonder, Spice Girls, Chaka Khan and many more.
Since its release earlier this year the band’s self titled album, ‘Just Jinjer’ (recorded in the group’s American home base) has received critical acclaim – and deservedly so, having already spawned several new radio hits including ‘what He means’ (No.1 on 3 radio stations) and ‘now is the time of your life’. The band believes wholeheartedly in the strength of this album and that people of tired of meaningless music and are hungry for more.

With the current line-up of frontman, Art Matthews, Brent Harris (drums) and Denholm Harding (bass), as well as newcomer, Sandy Chila (who also produced the most recent album), Matthews believes that the addition of Chila – has benefited the band’s sound immeasurably. “Sandy has brought a hip, indie flavour to the band, giving the songs more credibility and a cutting edge.”
The unmissable shows will present the band’s music in a whole new light and will feature a blend of unforgettable hits as well as the critically acclaimed newer material. Proud fans will experience “the biggest Just Jinjer production” yet on South African soil.
“Just Jinjer will be singing songs of peace at a time when the world is in crisis,” says Matthews. “We’ll be spreading some positive, proudly South African cheer. Here’s to you, our fans!”
