"Strictly Halaal" will give audiences the chance to see Riaad Moosa do brand new never-before-seen-ever-in-your-life material as well as his classic jokes that never date. It's the first opportunity to get intimate with Riaad in his own space as he uses comedy to tackles sensitive issues like Islamaphobia, racism and prolapsed hemorrhoids.
The show is called Strictly Halaal says Riaad because there is a sense of confusion and a lack of understanding about Muslims and their culture. “People are aware of words like Halaal and but very few understand its relevance and meaning. In my show, I will therefore tackle concepts associated with Muslims that people are aware of but do not fully understand. My aim is to dispel the myths about Islam using humour as a vehicle.”
The show’s called Strictly Halaal, but everyone's welcome.
Riaad will also muse on a range of topics from Bollywood to current politics to apartheid. And as he says, it's also a chance for all his relatives to find out why he is doing comedy instead of medicine.
The show will be a message of love, tolerance and oneness but hopefully it’s also funny.
"David Kau got Winnie Mandela to come to his show, I'm gonna try and get Osama," says Riaad.
Having trained as a comedy magician, Riaad was challenged to move over to pure stand-up at the Cape Comedy Collective's free Comedy Lab workshops.
Riaad spent 2002 living in Gauteng and performed regularly in venues around Jo’burg. He was the hit of the Heavyweight Comedy Jam in London in May 2006.The English crits saw Riaad as THE South African comic with a big international future.
