ARISE Magazine in association with METRO FM presents the THISDAY Music Festival  2009 Starring R. Kelly.  Kelly will be performing at the Sun City Superbowl on Saturday 27 June 2009 at 20h00 and the Grand Arena, Cape Town on Monday, 29 June 2009 at 20h00.
Kelly is one of the world’s top 40 best selling artists in history with album sales of over 40 million worldwide. R. Kelly said "I can’t wait to play to my fans in Africa who have always loved my music and give me and give me great inspiration.”
As the undisputed “King of R&B,” R. Kelly never seems to be far from the current soul scene.  Be it collaborating with Snoop (“That’s That”) or trading verses with Ciara (“Promises Remix”), this Chicago soul man has displayed a consistent brilliance throughout his seventeen-year career.
Kelly has been greatly influenced by his musical forefathers Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield and Donny Hathaway.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Kelly was into music at an early age.   Around the time of his graduation, Kelly began performing on street corners and at bus stations as a keyboard performer before he eventually formed the band, Public Announcement.  Kelly left Public Announcement to focus on a solo career and in 1993, his debut solo album, “12 Play” was released and yielded Kelly’s first number-one hit, “Bump ‘n Grind.”
In 1996, Kelly released one of his most successful singles with “I Believe I Can Fly.”  The single reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the UK pop charts.  The single was a huge worldwide success and remains Kelly’s signature song.
Building on the hype of “Fly”, Kelly released a double album entitled, “R” and “Chocolate Factory,” which became a runaway success for Kelly, selling over three million copies due to the success of singles such as “Ignition,” “Snake,” and “Step in the Name of Love.”
In June 2005, Kelly released his next album, “TP-3:  Reloaded.”  A five-part “mini-opera” titled “Trapped in the Closet” became an immediate hit when released as a single.  After the initial buzz from the first five chapters of the song, Kelly went on to produce up to twenty-two chapters of the “saga,” all being released to DVD.
In May of 2007, Kelly released his eighth studio album, “Double Up.”  It included the hit single, “I’m a Flirt Remix,” featuring T.I. and T-Pain.  The song peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.  It also reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks.  Another hit on the album, “Same Girl,” was a duet between Kelly and Usher.  The single peaked at number 20 on the Hot 100 and peaked at number four on the R&B charts.
Kelly truly is a windy-city maestro, creating wonderful music and pushing the sonic envelope whilst staying true to his game.  Audience goers will be thrilled with his onstage dynamism and superior lyricism, Kelly’s voice and the outstanding production is pure fire.
R. Kelly gives his fans not only what they want; he gives them twice as much.
